Citizens Advice Witness Service provides free and independent support for both prosecution and defence witnesses in every criminal court in England and Wales.
Our trained volunteers provide practical information about the court process as well as emotional support to help witnesses feel more confident when giving evidence. We can:
● provide information about the court process
● show witnesses the courtroom ahead of the trial
● be there to talk to in confidence
● accompany witnesses when they give their evidence
● be there to give support on the day of the trial; at verdict and sentencing
● help prepare witnesses who need extra support, this can be at their home or another safe place
● refer witnesses to our partners, including local Citizens Advice, after the trial for support with other issues
We are currently looking to recruit volunteers in the South Yorkshire and Humberside areas. Core volunteers support witnesses in court and outreach volunteers provide an enhanced service to particularly vulnerable or intimidated witness by providing out of court support both before and after the trial. Interested in joining our team? You’ll get full training, support and accreditation - plus a warm welcome. We pay out of pocket expenses.
You can apply if you’re 18 years old or over. You’ll also need to commit to: At least 12 months in the role comprising following training and accreditation. Undergo an enhanced DBS clearance.
If you are interested in the outreach volunteer role, you’ll need to be flexible with your availability and able to travel to venues way from the court building to provide support.
